A request to all ABers, when writing a thread could you please use the verb to HAVE and not the verb to OF

I have
you have
he/she has
we have
they have

Sounds much better than:

I (could) of
you (could) of
he/she (could) of
we (could) of
they (could) of

OK, gripe over

I would of always done that if I realised it annoyed you jd ;-)
You are so right, jd!! :-)
I've always been a bit of a pedant about the use of OF instead of HAVE, YOUR instead of YOU'RE, incorrect apostrophes, confusion over practice/practise, etc, but I have mellowed a bit. Most communication is done orally and those errors don't cause a problem when we listen to someone speaking so I can't see why it's much of a problem when it's written down.
Absolutely agree it drives me bonkers but I don't like to correct people!
Factor even in speech it still irritates, I hope I can learn to mellow a bit too as I don't see it changing in the future.......
Nah just grab em by the ears and shake em whilst screaming 'It's HAVE you Jeremy Kyler'. That ought to do the trick;-)
lol!
Can we now move on to Pacific instead of Specific, please...?

I would of pacifically done that!
Thanks for aksing!
LOOSE instead of LOSE is common on AB
Among pupils at school common ones were:
- putting apostophes on every plural (even when I wrote something like GRAPHS on the board many would copy it down as GRAPH's),
- OF or A instead of HAVE (should of/ should a)
- ALOT instead of A LOT
- ARE instead of OUR
- A instead of I (Yesterday a went to watch to a party)
- YOUR instead of YOU'RE
- 2 instead of too, two and to
- AFTER instead of HAVE TO

Although I have mellowed, chelle, I do still cringe when people say " He done it", "I should of went to...", "Can I lend a fiver?" , "That'll learn you" and "Yous " as the plural of "You"
Factor, no - can I borrow you a fiver?
^^ and yous/youse is very common in Scotland so I won't count that one - it's the plural of you, up there :-)
The use of YOUS as the plural of YOU puzzles me- it seems common in many area- certainly Scotland, also Nothern Ireland (well Jim McDonald always said it on Corrie), Liverpool (it was used a lot on Brookside) and I've heard it from Manchester comedians.
Perhaps it's actually more common than YOU and should be considered to be correct.
Oh yes the are / our thing gets me too.

Talking of plurals and j Kyle - where do people get the 'word' kids's from!!
Definitely - not definately or any other variant.
Oh dear!
First the spelling police.
Now the 'Gramma' police.
Lol, i just love the way many become shakespeare on the net, it's just soo real!
Jd_here, remember many type whilst having the tv or radio on, have screaming children or rowdy pets with a few being intoxicated tired fat fingered or or no grasp of grammar but who are we to judge?
Do you NOT make any mistakes AT ALL in life and if you did would you want to be pulled up on it?
Let us live and let live, tis nearly x-mas let us spread positivity and cheer around the globe.

Ah yeah but annemollie that's different- that's simply a spelling mistake which can occur for any number of reasons (dyslexia etc) or in my case a brain injury. That's not the same thing as using language poorly itself.
I saw a handwritten sign in a shop window last week which said "Get you're stamp's availibel he're".
I suppose most people will still understand it.
This is a Gripe thread, after all!
The students at the University here had to bring their complaints about broken furniture etc into my office and one of my "favourites" was Chester Draws.
