No, it will work without being plugged into a telephone line, though some of the interactive features wont be available.

Also often it's in the contract that you need to keep the box connected to a line for at least the first year.
as far as i know, you do have to have it linked to a telephone line. i got told mine couldn't be set up until we had a working phone line.
i'm no expert tho :o)
we havn;t got ours into a phone line, I think it is working ok, my son hasn't said it isn;t
I can't have Sky as I don't have a BT line - so there must be something in if they are turning down my business
It's part of a contract Eth, not a technical requirement.

if you look into it closely I'm pretty sure it's the cheep/free installation offer that includes the condition you connect the box to a phone line for at least a year.
not sure how true it is but i was told SKY had to be connected to a BT line for the 1st 12 months (as part of the contract) so that they could check it was a live system during this time and you hadnt legged it with there box/dish/LNB etc.

Thanks all for your answers.
Chuck - I didn't look in to it too closely as they told me I couldn't have it due to not having a BT line, so that was that
OK to clarify everything a bit

There is no technical requirement to have you Sky+ box continuously connected to a phone line, it will need to be connected to one when you first turn it on though so it can callback to sky and activate your card, after that it only uses the phone line for interactive services and for box office movies so as long as you don't use these it will work without being connected to a phone line.

However by not having it connected to a phone line you are breaking your terms of use with sky and they may suspend your viewing or even send somebody out to uninstall your system. with sky+ this condition exists for the whole time you have the box, not just the 12months I first thought.

it differs from normal sky where the phone line condition is for the first 12months only and also with normal sky you can pay and opt out of this condition, you can't with sky+
Oh yes it is because of the 12 month thing you need a BT line but we've had sky since my son was 14 (he's 22) and so the line isn;t plugged in. Mind you we only got sky plus decemcer 2007ish, and i think we did have a line plugged in for a while, not sure if my son did that for contract reasons, i know he had a line for his XBox 360 so maybe i am getting mixed up
Chuck sky havn't said anything about the sky+ being unplugged and my son that uses it says it's been unplugged from the phone since we moved here last March
I think realistically speaking Dot they don't really monitor if the boxes are plugged into a phone line or not and it would lose them too much money to cancel peoples subscriptions for not having their boxes connected to a phone line.

But it is part of the T&C's so they could do it.
our local provate installer will put it in without a phone line, and charge an extra 20 quid to do so. He uses a mobile connection to activate the card etc.

This is breaking Sky's T&Cs, but **** 'em.
