Would you not wonder about the type of person who wanted to inflict so much pain on another person?

I am not saying the punishment shouldn't be greater than it is in many cases......most probably.....but birching?.........x
The UK abolished the birch in 1948. As the IOM is not part of the UK it remained until the 70s but rarely, if ever used. Whilst I would cheerfully welcome the return of hanging I would draw the line at the birch, smacks too much of Islam.
I'm not sure it's as efficacious as you think. I knew an unsuccessful criminal who spent more of his adult life in prison than at liberty. He'd been birched when younger and it didn't change his criminal career.
Can these people not talk?
Thou rascal beadle, hold thy bloody hand.
Why dost thou lash that ***? Strip thine own back.
Thou hotly lust’st to use her in that kind
For which thou whipp’st her.
We used to go on holiday to the Isle of Man when I was a child. My parents, and grandparents had told me about the birch. My knowing about it, ensured that I behaved impeccably for the whole two weeks.
Although I have not researched it, I believe that only men were birched, certainly in the latter years.
Would you otherwise have acted in such a manner that might have led you to enduring it?
:-))
Aye up, Sandy's quoting Shakespeare.
No, not really Sandy. I had lots of deterrents in my little life.
sensible parents, tilly, in warning you!

More, more....
// I would draw the line at the birch, smacks too much of Islam.//

no I think that is stoning Jack ( pelting rather than smoking )

Sindie - perhaps he was hoping you would offer to ... birch him.
Could a potential candidate for birching avoid it if he confessed to being a masochist?
Falsely confessed ^^
Possibly, Sandy.
The devil's always in the details.
How about the stocks/pillory then?

yeah if the wrong doer were a sado-masochist, and was down for birching would it be worse punishment for him if the beadle were to stand there and say," I won't!"
Jeremy Beadle? Remember him?
^^^. That would be no answer. The beadle would be trampled in the stampede to replace him.
