Try "The Joy Luck Club" - it's a drama based on Amy Tan's novel about a group of Chinese women and their mothers. The only film I've ever seen move my father to tears.

try "the cutting edge", its early 90's ice-skating romantic comedy, not everyones cup of tea, but there's something about it ....

AMELIE, it's French with English subtitles but is completely romantic and quite funny.
