I realise I'll probably be criticised and castigated for this question, however ....

It's impossible not to have read in the press the recent events surrounding the parents of Madeleine McCann, their removal as suspects in their daughter's disappearance and the release of the Police files, however, what I couldn't believe when I read it was an alleged quote from their 'spokesperson' stating that the McCanns were 'considering legal action against the Portugese Police' ....

Am I missing something here, or didn't these educated people leave their children alone in a hotel in a foreign country like unwanted guests so they could swan off for a meal with their friends in a bistro which they claimed gave an ideal view of the childrens' room (albeit we now know that isn't the case) only for them to find later than the unspeakable had occurred ?

Please don't think I'm emotionless and, as a parent, I can't imagine any more of a hell than the McCanns are going through, however, what seems to be forgotten here is that Madeleine's parents are, by no stretch of the imagine, entirely innocent in the circumstances surrounding their daughter's disappearance .... THEY left their children alone .... and now THEY are 'considering legal action against the Portugese Police' ....

I can see why it gets heated. We all, at the end of the day, are mindful that whoever we apportion blame to, there's still a little girl missing (dead?) somewhere.

Opinions are perfectly ok but when somebody - anybody - starts hating the way you do, LoftieLottie, it shows the person for what they are. Hatred is an emotion that works like acid upon a person and cannot help but make that person cruel and unforgiving. I am very sad that you cannot see that.

I know it easy to judge - it always is when you are not involved.

Very simply - the neglected their children, and now they are payng a dreadful price, as is, or has, their little sweetheart.

I do believe they could have behaved with several degrees more dignity than they have - and i remain mystified why this particular case attracted, and still does attract such media saturation, when so many others go untouched and unmourned.

It is an emotive subject and because the McCanns were at fault, people like to latch on to that fact because it makes them feel more secure - nothing can happen to their own child because their child would not be left alone. It prevents the thoughts of the "there but for the grace of God" variety. I think it is a shame though that there still isn't more compassion for their loss.

I have been around a long time and there are very few people that I have ever despised or even really disliked. I despise the McCanns because of their negligence to their child and their attempts to cast the blame on everybody else. I don't need a sermon on 'hate' from you.

There's no mystification andy- the media is still interested in this story, as Kate and Gerry have made sure that the plight of their daughter has remained in the forefront. I thought it was extremely clever how every few weeks a "new" photo of Madeleine was released by them, thus making sure she was never far from the news and front pages of newspapers.

Sadly, not every parent of missing children, has the savvy, the know how/contacts/ funds whatever to do what they've done by raising awareness of their children around the world.

Yes, I hear folk say that by doing this they've created a 'circus' but I don't believe this- I honestly believe they've done all this to get as much coverage as possible and the return of their daughter ASAP, sadly it's not worked- but God they've tried!

Yes the parents were guilty of negligence, i don't think anyone disputes that fact, but as has already been said they as well as wee maddie, the grandparents and the twins are all paying the price for that neglect.

I don't agree that they are turning all the attention onto themselves, they are doing all they can to keep the plight of little Maddie alive in the media.

The Portugese police were incompotent in their handling of the case, they became blinkered in their belief of the parents guilt, when that happens they look for evidence to back up their own theory and don't pursue any other avenue of investigation.

Wasn't there another story of the mother of a missing child, who is serving time after having her confession, beaten out of her by the Portugese police.

I'm damn sure i would sue them too!!!!!!!

Thank you for your comments .... glad I'm not the only one who is looking at Madeleine's parents with complete contempt .... I'm dreading the inevitable talk-shows, books, more magazine articles about how badly they were portrayed and treated by the media and, dare I say it, a movie !!!

Hopefully, common sense will prevail and Madeleine's parents will be treated with the contempt they appear to have shown for their children in treating them and 'abandoning' them as they did .... all so they could have a meal in peace with their friends ....!

If anyone thinks a kidnapper is going to keep a little girl with so obvious a defining mark( such as her eye) alive and in their company, they are sadly deluding themselves.
As for the police, how many other cases in Portugal had to take a back seat due to the immense manpower put behind the search, but still that was not good enough for a couple who had put their children in that situation.
To the person who claimed the twins were thriving - it cannot be due to their parents who have spent the past year on their grand world tour - meeting world leaders, making appearances at events which have absolutely nothing to do with their search, such as the Edinburgh TV and Media festival, and promoting safety measures for countries to develop to protect children. So is it now the Portugese government's fault for not having an amber alert system in place??
Being a parent means you have to make sacrifices - you don't get to go out boozing and eating with your friends unless you can find decent childcare, being a professional couple doesn't exclude you from that. They have no one to blame but themselves and the one person who suffered for their neglect was their poor daughter.

I don't think they are saying it's the portugese's government fault for not having the amber light system in place.

They are highlighting the fact that it would be of benefit to all European countries to put this system into use, if it saves the lifes of abducted children, then it can only be a good thing.

i totally agree and reckon they should be charged with child neglect. They left three very young children on their own and anything could have happened to all three. Both parents are doctors and am sure have come across accidents taht have happened to children left unsupervised.
