Was this the right decision, should all books based on conspiracy theories also be banned?

After all they could also be accused of writing lies, it is all dependant what point of view is taken.

i think if someone decided to write a specualitive book about my children, they wouldn't even be capable of walking to court.

yes, the right decision.

The book was banned for being defamatory, not for being a conspiracy theory, You can have a conspiracy theory without defaming anyone. And you can call the McCann's liars if you wish - but you'd better be ready with a defence if they sue you.
This wasn't a conspiracy theory, it was outright lies on behalf of the police officer. If he has no proof for his alegations he should keep his big mouth shut.....and stop trying to make money out of the tragedy.
Good. Anyone who subscribes to the theory that Madeleine died in their apartment and the McCanns covered it up need their heads read.
The right decision. As they have not been convicted in Spain of any crime, they have clearly been defamed by a book that says they were guilty.

All books are subject to the laws of libel, any conspiracy theory book which defames a living person could be also banned. In practice, it is often not worth giving the book further publicity, and bringing a case for libel is very expensive, and only the very rich tend to use it.

A book?........no Royalties for the McCanns........no money in it for them.

I wonder if someone wanted to make a Hollywood film of the case, if the McCanns would go to court to have it banned?
I really feel for them , it has to be torture to go through this, having said that and it has been said many times before, I cannot get my head round these two professional people, leaving 3 babies alone to go for a meal albeit across the road from the apartment, these two weren't <chavs> out on the razzle but what appears to be very well educated people

/// conspiracy theory, it was outright lies ///

As I have already said conspiracy theories could also be construed as outright lies.

ie. "Prince Phillip had Princess Diana killed"

"The CIA blew up the twin towers".

"The Americans never landed on the Moon"

" The McCanns over administered a sleeping drug"

And before all you AOG haters hasten to attach any of these accusations to me personally, I add that these well know conspiracy theories are for illustration purposes only, and I in no way agree with them.
Nobody should be making money out of it No_Know!
i don't think you can compare say, the roswell incident with 'you murdered your daughter'.

only a complete buffoon would do that ......

/// these two weren't <chavs> out on the razzle but what appears to be very well educated people ///

The whole story would have been alot different then, if they had been "chavs" .

WHY?
they would have been arrested onsight or when they touched down in the UK as the one from M'Bro was for leaving her kids home alone?
chavs or otherwise , although it is too late now I'm afraid
"The McCanns over administered a sleeping drug."

How likely is that?

As doctors... they know the dangers of overdoses, and as such, are extremely unlikely to administer a fatal dose of medicine to their own children. It is people with no medical knowledge whatsoever who are likely to do this.

If your house had problems with its electrics, who would you call? A hairdresser or an electrician?

And why Gerry McCann have spent a good time chasing his children round the park to tire them out if they were going to give them sleeping drugs anyway?

Let's tire them out before we knock them out? Oh puhlease !

Madeleine was kidnapped and so a book accusing her parents of covering up her death should rightly be banned.
I absolutley agree NM, she was kidnapped to order and in as much as the world was shocked by the McCanns leaving their kids, not one penny should be made out of this tragedy

Surely we should be able to read this policeman's account fro his side and see if his accusations stand up to criticism.
wasn't it available online sqad?
Joy...I don't know and I cannot find the ruling on AOG's link.
// Surely we should be able to read this policeman's account fro his side and see if his accusations stand up to criticism. //

No we shouldn't. He is/was a policeman, and if his account has some merit, it should lead to the McCanns' arrest and 'his account' should be presented to a jury.

/// As doctors... they know the dangers of overdoses, and as such, are extremely unlikely to administer a fatal dose of medicine ///

Extremely unlikely maybe, but not impossible. If you follow the news, doctors have been known to accidentally administer overdoses quite often.

/// Madeleine was kidnapped ///

You know this for certain do you, or is it the conclusion you yourself have come to?
