Hadn't heard this. Yes, loved him. First memory is of him as Quentin Crisp in the TV programme The Naked Civil Servant - "after three years it doesn't get any worse". Then Stephen Ward in Scandal, somebody with a chest problem in Alien and John Merrick in Elephant man There are others. RIP.
You've embarrassed me, Jackdaw. I too remember him as Richard Rich "To gain the whole world, but to lose one's soul? But to lose it for Wales, Richard.." - spoken by Scofield, written by Bolt lovely stuff and one of my top ten films).
And yes, the miscarriage of justice which was the Christie story. Fine film. A compelling if not totally convincing argument against capital punishment.
A truly great actor who played his many roles so brilliantly. His portrayal of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984 was unforgettable. A sad loss to the world of film and theatre.
He hasn't been well for a while. One of our best actors I think. I remember him as the naked Civil Servant, which must be over 40 years ago now. Marvellous as Caligula of course !
A sad day, as we won't see his like again methinks.
A superb actor who played many great lead roles and truly enhanced any film he appeared in. And such a distinctive voice. When he played the voice of the dragon in the tv series Merlin, he had me believing that if dragons did exist and could talk, then that is exactly how they would sound. RIP.
