Think it is Government in Westminster with their anti Home Rule tactics.
All the pupils will get into Scottish university free of tuition fees. A bit far
fetched for most of the pupils though.
You might be right Sir O, although my experience tells me that it is far easier to get into an English "university - ex poly" than a Scottish one. Many years ago a schoolfriend of mine applied for admission to Edinburgh University, purely on the grounds that it was nearer home (living in Newcastle). The University replied in the most tactful manner, regretting that he did not quite reach the standards required for admission, and that he might consider lowering his sights somewhat and apply to Oxford.
Very droll Mike. I am surprised that they did not add Cambridge as another possibility for your friend.
No, even in those days Cambridge was known for what it was; a den of vice. No self-respecting Scottish academic would have ever dreamed of suggesting that.

At a parents' evening in 1963 my form master told my mother that if I would only knuckle down I could walk into Cambridge. Even at the age of 15 I was sufficiently aware to tell my mother, when she reported my teacher's remarks with pride, that I would never go to Cambridge because, "Whilst I could possibly stand being buggered, I would not betray my country."
I know we are supposed to suspend disbelief for TV programmes but for me this was a step too far.

I used to watch it but even before this move I never found it realistic- for example, the students' conversations were often too sensible, teachers undermined each other in front of pupils in ways that wouldn't happen and teachers seemed to have time to visit pupils' homes.

So many teachers and pupils moving hundreds of miles from Rochdale to Scotland was obviously ridiculous.

It was also silly that a boy who hadn't enrolled was allowed to join on the spot after a teacher totally undermined the Head in front of all the pupils.

Finally it was ridiculous that the students and teachers seemed to be living in the same accommodation (some form of guesthouse?)

I know it's a story but I couldn't enjoy it last night and turned off.

Factor 30 I also turned off
Used to watch it sometimes and quite enjoy it. It was so utterly pathetic and ridiculous last night I turned it off.

In fact, come to think of it, I mainly watched it for Grantley - he is superb!!
However Factor:

"Finally it was ridiculous that the students and teachers seemed to be living in the same accommodation (some form of guesthouse?)"

They did that in the school my son attended. ;o)
Jane from Eastenders with a Scottish accent playing the alcoholic teacher.

I enjoyed it, but the storylines are always very similar.
Jane from EE is Scottish.
I would add that the school my son went to didn't have teachers arriving back drunk in the evenings (well, not that I know of!)
It's a shame, it used to be quite an entertaining programme but as many others have said on here that it's just silly now. I thought that I recognised Jane - please return to EastEnders - they need your help there!(Is she really scottish?)
