If you do try to refuse a check they could seize your vehicle

You basically have not rights to refuse Customs anything. They are the only authority who dont need warrants to enter properties, seize assets. Pretty much anything. Moral of the sory, never p**s off a customs officer!

Customs has a "Writ of Assistance', which is effectively a balnket search warrent that allows them access to pretty much anything, anytime (although at night the Police need to be present). They don't normally use it, prefering instead to get search warrents. However, they can and will use it where necessary.
They can also get a conviction based on rebated fuel in the fuel filter, even if the tank is drained. If you google the UK duties tribunal and then search for excise rebated fuel, you will see a lot of cases that Customs won, and almost none that the vehicle owner won
If you are using red diesel, stop it as purchase records give them the lead. If you are thinking about it, don't bother

you would be better registering your vehicle to run on WVO, and using cooking oil, than you ever would be using red...
red has zero duty, and customs and exercise, well they get paid to make sure you pay... and WHEN they catch you, they can and will sieze your vehicle, they will give yo a HEFTY fine, and a police record, which wont be walking on the moon...
you can run WVO and HMC&E allow you 2500 litres a year for free! thats around 600 gallons...
oh, we own a HGV garage and service WVO trucks all day long... smelly disgusting things that they are.
