i parked my car at the private car park of the school where iwas taking swimming lessons. when i came to come home my car had been vandalised . there were other cars that were damaged as well. the only sign on show was a sign saying private car park for patrons and visitors to the school. can i make a claim against the school or the local council

unlikely - it's generally accepted wherever you park you do so with no liabilty to them.
No - the only claim would be if they were negligent in their duty of care.

So if a wall they owned fell on your car because it was in a dangerous condition, they would be liable.

They aren't responsible for vandals.
It's a long shot but have the police been involved? I had my car vandalised last year and the police sent a CSI out - I thought it was a waste of time but they tracked the scrote who did it down cos he left fingerprints and blood (ew!) on my car. In the end I agreed not to press charges on the grounds he gave me cash compensation to pay for the damage (which the police recommended). The kid was only 14 but he also had to write me an apology and the police gave him a ticking off in front of his parents (which I agreed was better than him getting a useless Asbo and me getting nowt for getting my windows replaced and paintwork resprayed).
