my mother in law has been living in a council house for about 25 years, she is a pensioner and getting on a bit, is it possible for her grandson to have his name on the rent book so that the house goes to him rather than someone else.

i would have thought not ... after all to get a council house you have to be in need of housing
I thought council houses, could be passed down only once.
So if your grandson got the house and had children, then they could not get the house.
i cant believe that council houses can be "passed down" EVEN ONCE. if for example, the grandson had a perfectly good place to live, but got passed down this house, what about all the people on the waiting list who dont have a place to live, or are in hostels etc ... surely their need is greter than someone who is already in accommodation? And if the grndson is living with the grandmother, does that mean he dosent qualify for a council house of his own? if so, then the people on the list should definately get it quicker than him surely?
In most cases, I would tend to agree with bednobs. However I believe there are instances where a Council will grant a secure tenancy and then, I think it is possible to leave it to a surviving relative. I think you will have to approach the Council and ask the question.
