Can you type out the sentence please, Pasta?
Only times I see it is in a music title by Pedro Delgado, so it might be a Spanish word
The OED Online doesn't show that word - can you tell us what the context is in the story & maybe the story's title/author?
What is the title of the story?

Could "fwent" be a misprint?
It means flown in Spanish.

No idea of an English word though

I've checked out several online dictionaries and a few sites for archaic words...no joy.
It's from an old story, but is in a collection published this year.
Maybe a typo...?
Within the story deceptive or deceitful doesn't seem to fit.
Maybe I'll contact the publisher at some point.
Pasta - does it give the author or is it "Anon"? What's the collection called?
Foul ?
It's likely that the text was typed up from an audio-tape so there's always a chance that the typist misheard the word or, even, that the author changed his mind which word to use and messed it up. It makes perfect sense if you omit the word.

The author was Scottish...I wonder if it is some old usage...even though it's not set in Scotland.
suent meaning smooth or uniformly.

an old 's' was written like an 'f' and it would be easy to mistake a 'w' for a 'u' if it had originally been hand-written.
yeah I wondered about a mis-read that had escaped the proof readers

1930 is well within the time that publishers accepted handwritten copy - people were talking about 30% error rate - but 30% of what?
