This may sound trivial but sometimes trivialities can start wars. In the next few weeks I will be having some work done at the front of my terraced house involving the digging out of the small frontal area and laying block paving( spelling?), I informed my next door neighbour that this would involve a skip for a short period and that because of the nature of the job there could be some stone cutting involved which could create abrasive dust and I suggested that she may like to move her car a little further down the street but her retort was " it's at my front door and if it's dirty you will have to clean it".I know this is silly but as I said earlier these silly things can create monsters.Think about your neighbours and give me some answers.S.O.G.

SOG-----I think you have done all you can by keeping your neighbour informed of what is going to happen. If she chooses not to move her car then that is up to her.I would not personally think about washing it for her -- she is aware of what may happen -- her choice now.
Absolutely agree with Brenda - you've made the friendly approach informing her - she's the unreasonable one !
Yep...you've tried so not much else you can do.
Axtually, I think I'd drop a friendly note through the letter box just to remind her of what you're going to be doing. That way she can't say that she wasn't warned.
Or ask the person who is doing the work to suggest she moves her car. That way, if she does kick up a fuss you have a witness.
sounds like environmental vandalism!! whats up, too lazy to mow the lawn when its needed?
actually i think you shoudl clean it.

if i threw a bucket of soil over your property, youd go mad and demand i clean it off. wouldnt you??

..how is this any different?

you are making a mess and its going to go on her car...just because you arent deliberately putting it there doesnt mean you arent responsible...

having said that, she is obviously being awkward...so bung her £3 or somehting and tell her to get to the car wash...
Why should he clean it? The council doesn't clean my car when they start cutting up the road. Nor do the gas board come to think about it....
-- answer removed --
I'd clean it.........well I wouldn't but I'd pay someone else to.
because he dirtied it.

i wouldnt care what job my neighbour was doing to their house, if they cover my car in crap, they should clean it...

or perhaps i clean it and throw the bucket of muck all over theres...??

its just common courtesy

since when did it become acceptable to throw mess all over other peoples property?
i realise he cant help making the mess, but that doesnt make it okay...

have you ever asked the council to clean up?
also i assume it will take a while to do the job...so do you expect her to have to pay every day to go to a car wash?
not to mention the inconvenience...
cover it with a sheet
She could just move the car a few doors down. It's not like it's hard work.
i agree she could...but you think a few extra feet will stop the dust?

and what if theres no space?

to be honest i just amazed the poster is so indignant about it..as though hes the aggrieved party here...

i hate it when my car gets covered in dust etc becasue of builders...its happened to me for weeks - its a pain...and theres no where else i could have parked either...
When we were getting the dashing done to our house we advised our neighbours the same and it was no bother, I think you've been courteous and helpful enough to suggest that to her, if she doesn't take the advice tough..You did warn her
I would cover my back and put it in writing. Point out the dust and the advice to move.

I take it a third party is involved and they are doing the cutting I would point this out., you are perfectly entitled to make adjustments to your property and I think you have been resonable in telling your neighbour I know many who wouldn't bother.

If after there is any compliant tell them to to take it up with your contractor.
I agree with ummmm,

ask the person who is doing the work to suggest she moves her car.

Thank you all for your help. I will talk to the contractor about the problem and also talk to my neighbour again and hopefully come to some ammicable agreement. Thanks again.S.O.G
I think Environmental Health law makes you responsible for ensuring the minimum amount of dust leaves your property, for pollution/nuisance reasons. Also if the surfacing you are putting down isn't permeable it will need planning permission, and they may add a condition about control of dust emanating from the site.
