young driver insurance
Hi my 18 year old daughter has just passed her driving test and we are buying her car tommorow and we are shocked at the cost of car insurance! any ideas of how to go about getting it as cheap as possible please.

The car insurance industry is now far more competitive than it was when I started driving, I remember paying around �150 p.a. for third party cover. In today�s money that �150 would be at least �1,500.
To add to the insult, my car (about 5 years old at the time) was a small low powered foreign marque, had it been British, it would have been group 1 (on the old grouping system), but the rip off insurance industry increased the rating by 2 groups for it being foreign. Their rationale for this was that the parts for foreign cars were more expensive, but being third party, my insurance would never pay out to repair my car.

Just a little clarification needed here chezdean. Who is telling you that PassPlus will knock 30% off the premium - the PassPlus website/bumph/propaganda or your insurer? In my experience it is likely to be nowhere near 30% off! Expect 10-12% at the very best. (and you will find many insurers give nothing at all!!)
Oh and get it in writing from the insurer before you splash out on the (comparatively) expensive and frequently discredited rip-off that is the Pass Plus course. My niece was lied to by her (prospective) insurer and went back to take up their quote after doing Pass Plus only to be told that what she had previously been informed was a load of rubbish and there was no discount for Pass Plus holders.
Asking around her peer group it was obvious that many driving instructors were "overselling" the potential benefits that completing the Pass Plus course would have on insurance premiums (to put it kindly!) Vested interest anyone??
It would seem that those insurers who give anything at all are few and far between, those who actually give something worth having are even rarer!! The bigger discounts tend to be from the companies with the most outrageous quotes in the first place, thus the real saving is next to ****** all.

Hi chezdean, As LCDMAN says the few that may give some sort of discount are usually the ones that charge the most in the first place. My sons looked around when they first passed their tests and found Quinn Direct were quite good even without the pass plus. Worth a look anyway.

just to let everyone know the outcome i managed to get my daughters insurance down from �1994 no breakdown cover to �1200 this includes breakdown cover i did this by taking out a multi-car policy with Admiral for all 3 of our cars the great bonus is mine and my husbands insurance halfed in price with this option so i am amazed and would defo reccomend. Therefore we can pass the savings of our insurance on to our daughter.thanks for all replies;-)
