DVD

I'm having problems getting my Toshiba DVD to work. It's almost new and has worked but when I switch it on I get a large black X on the screen and sometimes it scrolls. No sound or picture. I think I'm putting it on the wrong setting. Surely it should just start when I put a disc in? Can anyone help please?

Is it DVD or CD?
What type/region disc is it you are playing?
That sounds like generated by the player. How is it connected to TV? Scart or HDMI?

Albags it is a recordable DVD. Attached to the TV, I think ,via scart. We also have Sky+ connected.
What's it doing with shop DVD .. and a standard recorded DVD-/+R?
My bet is it will not suppot that media or type of media.
I have no idea, but I would unplug it for a while, then power bit up again.

I would also unplug the scart lead and push it back in again firmly, at both ends of the lead.

This may have no effect, but definitely cures some ills.

Albags I am trying to use a shop bought DVD. The large black cross on the screen looks as though I need to change the horizontal and vertical holds. Obviously not possible with new technology. I bought the machine from John Lewis and they don't repair anything where I live, they just replace. This machine has the same problem as the last one. Can't just go on having them replaced.
On some TVs you have to manually select the input source.

On my old TV when I switched on my DVD player of Sky box the TV would automatically switch to that input. On my new Samsung TV I have to manually select the source. Check your TV user instructions. You may have a AV/TV button to press repeatedly to select input source.
