Can I mix types of antifreeze (say orange with green)? Why or why not.

can't see why not.
don't do it !!
it will give a very nasty colour !
on a serious note, no you cannot. they are made up of different chemicals and you will not get proper cooling. Get the yellow stuff, its made to be mixed with either type.

I have asked my mate who is a mechanic. He says it is ok to mix different colours.
Some antifreezes are Different colours due to the cars spec, if you put a different colour in other than reccomended you may get heating or cooling problems.
As to mixing them i think all you would end up with is a brown coloured water that may even react with your hoses.
