If it looks like a cherry and it tastes like a cherry it probably is a cherry... just check the leaves in an identification book but unless it is aa proper fruit tree rather than an ornamental the fruit will be small and quite sour...
my cherry fruiting (wild one, small bitter fruit) is nearly over...if its only just fruiting now, it may not be cherry.
wait till they soften & sweeten.....inedibles stay hard & bitter

thks guys, tasted one but spat it out ,it tasted ok soft and not bitter,in fact exactly like a cherry ,im a bit apprehesive, same with mushrooms better safe than sorry
To make absolutely certain, why not take the fruit and a leaf or two along to a local nursery or garden centre for positive identification?
Sounds as if they are ok to eat but as you say better safe than sorry.
PS You could always make a Tart for your mother -in- law
My tree a dwarf cherry, (type stella) has like woolfgangs almost finished, had a better year then I expected as the tree was moved last year about 2.5kilo of nice sweet fruit with probably another half kilo still to ripen, but if you have any doubt about your tree get it checked it might just be one of the ornamental strains
