I have fitted an iron gate at the side of my house. I've used a big padlock to lock it, however I have noticed that the gate could easily be removed by unscrewing the 2 nut and bolts on the hinge side. Is there any kind of fixings I could use to prevent a trespasser armed with a spanner fromopen the gate from the hinge side

It appears you have the nuts on the outside. Could you not use round headed (without slots) bolts from the outside and then put the nuts on the inside of the gate?
You could drill through the nut & bolt, & put in a split-pin. Or, purchase some 'nyloc' nuts & put those on. Or, bash the thread over on the bolts with a hammer!

BTW, a friend of mine had his gates nicked. Our friends in the travelling community came armed with a blow-torch:-(
Even if the nuts and bolts are removed, isn't the gate still held secure by the big padlock?
