How deep a hole does banana (musa basjoo) need?

Hi, Just bought my first basjoo which I will be planting out shortly in the garden. While digging the other day I noticed that my soil level is only about 18" deep. I actually plunged a rod into the ground to check depth and it kept hitting stone at about 18". This happened in several spots. There seems to be a concrete base in my garden, not sure yet. The plant is currently in a 15l pot about 9" high. Will the plant be happy in 18" of soil. I'm hoping roots will spread sideways if they can't go down. Thanks Mike
