I love hot dogs. I've always wondered: Why they were called this?

A friend told me they were named hot dogs because of the Viennese (Frankfurter) sausages used in the buns which resembled those funny little sausage dogs. Apparently the name was started in New York y East European immigrants who brought the sausages over to the States with them and wanted a taste of home.
