I've become addicted to tinned mackerel (sp?)! Is it safe to eat every day, or is there a recommended intake?

Tinned fish such as mackerel, salmon, sardines and tuna are good in pasta bakes, sauces or simply on toast. They are high in iron and vitamin B12 and also contain Omega-3 fatty acids which are important for circulation and a healthy immune system. I do believe they also contain Calcium (but dont quote me on that!)

Not sure if there is a maximum intake per week but you might like to think about how much fatty acids you are consuming if eating them every day - again not really sure!

According to this site, up to 4 portions a week if you are not breastfeeding or intending to become pregnant.

Might be worth checking with your GP if you are taking any blood thinning drugs/anticoagulants but otherwise there's no limit

Thanks you pair. The link was interesting Ethel, I thought canned tuna was classed as oily fish, but apparently only fresh!

Cheers redmug! I must've been typing my message when you posted.

I love it too! A much underrated fish, mackerel. Much better for you than (farmed) salmon and more environmentally friendly than tuna.

And, I think, quite often caught and canned in this country. Hoorah!

Princes do a variety of mackerel, diff sauces etc. My favourite is Spicy tomato sauce, it is sooo delicious.

Nothing better than eating something so tasty, that is good for you too!! Bonus!!

I'm not sure about the recommended intake, but oily fish is full of omega 3. This aids brain function and is seriously lacking in modern diets. It has been taken over by all sorts of manufactured fats that slow down messages to and from the brain. Eat the oily fish!!!!
I love mackerel in tomato sauce but only ever seem to have it on toast and I haven't had it even that way for some months now but all this talk of it has made me decide to have a tin for my tea with my quiche and salad. Thankyou all for bringing it to my mind, I am so looking forward to it now. :-)
Oily fish can contain pollutants and should not be eaten to excess. About 140g per week will give you all the bits that your body needs.
