Can you freeze cheddar cheese? If so, how long should it be kept in the freezer and once defrosted can it be used for slicing, grating as per usual, or is it only any good for cooking with?

I've done this on several occasions when my work took me away from home, but while there was nothing actually wrong with the cheese after defrosting, and it was OK for sarnies, etc, there was definitely a deterioration in taste (that I was willing to put up with). Fine for cooking. Longest in the freezer was a couple of months. Take advantage of cut-price offers, try it, and decide!

Advise well given - I will act upon it accordingly - just the concept of freezy cheese puts a smile on my face. The downside is I won't be able to eat up all that left over cheese on the lame excuse that it is going out of date. :-(
I often freeze cheese with no problems. The only thing I found different is that it`s a bit crumblier.

Thanks for your help on this one. I am going to experiment now with the next BOGOF offer on cheese and stock up my freezer!
