Just one suggestion today - I'm working up a full 'festive list' for your delectation next week.

Actually it's a bit of a cheat recommending this, as I haven't actually tried it yet - but I've left my bottle with a friend who should now be decanting it, so it has breathed nicely for our meal tonight :

I've been promised a dry run of "Chritmas Dinner for the Kids" - G doesn't cook very often and so is nervous about the festive season - hence the trial run (and a special bottle from me).

With goose I would tempted by the rare German reds, not easy to get and consequently not cheap either, they tend to be from the Nahr valley, one up, or down, from the Mosel.

Goose, mikey ... something of an experiment from Mr Aldi's freezer apparently.

But it seems I've got my days confused & it's tomorrow night anyway.

SunnyD...actually a nice red would go very well with Goose.

I can recall my Dad bringing home a goose for Xmas, in about 1965/1966. My poor Mum was completely overwhelmed !

All of us took turns plucking the ruddy thing, and I can recall that bucket-loads of fat had to be ladled out of the oven ! It took hours to cook as well.

It was lovely though !
Has it been decanted properly, I wonder?

EEK.... wellllll Dave.....me o'l chap.... mind that nice bottle of wine..the one for Christmas......it kind of just..well...it needed testing...so that second bottle will be just a quaffable...hic...

If I was buying a bottle of wine for Xmas Day, whether its dark meat or white, I would choose a Gewurztraminer, from Alsace, probably the best Riesling that you will ever taste.....medium dry, with a really spicy finish. Its also rather robust and will cope with any food that that you can throw at it.

Its never very cheap here in Britain, but its definitely worth looking out for. Expect to pay at least £8:00 a bottle, and beware of South African "Gewurztraminers"

That's an excellent idea, zebo - I'm going to have a google around my usual wine merchants and supermarkets to see what I can find.
