When vegetarian friends come to stay with us we have to go *** restaurants and eat mediocre food so that they can indulge their fad. Are they being unreasonable?

Let's see if I've got this right, when we have veggies staying with us we should just go to our favourite restaurants and the veggies will make their own arrangements?
Yes, jomifl.
Yes. Because unless you are living in the middle ages, any restaurant should be able to offer a variety of veggie friendly meals.

A lot of you need to get out more, there are some parts of the world where restaurants don't provide vegetarian meals except by special request and the midday set meal (all that is available) is definitely not vegetarian, eg. confit de canard, steak, etc. Of course there is always the option of leaving the meat and only eating the small heap of chips, lettuce leaf and small tomato.
jomilf its you that needs to get out more lol! even MacDonalds and KFC have veggie options these days! I have never ever been anywhere where there has not been a non meat option even if its just a plain salad.

Retro, KFC and Macdo. aren't mediocre? Are you suggesting that I should eat *** in one of those joints because I have a veggie guest? I think you have just made my point for me..... :-)
It must be difficult if you live in an area without a wide range of eateries, most near me have good vegetarian options available and as said some foreign cuisine restaurants have them as specialities.

Mamya, we have a wide range of eateries but not chinese, thai, bangladeshi, Indian, Greek, or any other that offers vegetarian food as well as normal food.
My point is that vegetarians are so by choice, non vegetarians do not need the hassle of going the extra mile because of that choice. Why can't vegetarians compromise just a little, or do their beliefs not allow it?
jomifl don't start twisting my words I mentioned macD and KFC to show even the lowliest of eateries have veggie options I was not suggesting to take anyone out to eat there. Go to any good restaurant and they will have non meat things on their menu and if your 'favourite' restaurant has no veggie options at all then maybe mention to them they are missing out on a growing trend of people wanting to eat less meat. What do you expect of your friends? To decide to get their teeth into a rare Chateau Briand so not to inconvenience you? If it bothers you that much just don't invite them to dine out with you!
Being a vegetarian isn't necessarily a lifestyle choice, two good friends are simply unable to process animal protein and have had no option but to follow a vegetable based diet.
Should you find yourself in London with a vegetarian in tow you might want to consider a meal here www.vanillablack.co.uk it is fabulous.
Same as eccles, I have a limited diet due to not being able to digest heavy proteins and fat. I would probably go for the lightest or veggie option in the restaurant. Its not necessarily a fad. you should be thankful you have the choice to eat whatever you like!
I hear ya jom, stick em out in the garden with a lettuce leaf whilst you go KFC, serves the yoghurt eating, tree hugging weirdo right ;-)
I suppose another factor in how far we would go to please friends is how much we like them.
Maybe appease is a better word than please.
I'm not a vegetarian, but when eating out, I often opt for a vegetarian option as there's always a choice and a good one too ! Don't think it's fair to criticise folk because they are vegetarian. Love BOO's answer, as usual !

I understand that some people have special dietary requirements through no fault of their own and am happy to accommodate those. What I have difficulty with is that if someone decides to be a vegetarian it impacts on me. Since being a vegetarian is optional why shouldn't vegetarians just occasionally compromise just a little...?
What, eat meat do you mean ?? Wouldn't be a veggie then would they ...
so you are saying that when your veggie friends comes to stay, they should eat meat - so as not to put you out?

that's a bit odd......

veggie food can be shocking in restaurants so i don;t blame them for wanting to search out somewhere decent to eat
