When vegetarian friends come to stay with us we have to go *** restaurants and eat mediocre food so that they can indulge their fad. Are they being unreasonable?

Mr O has been vegetarian for 20 years and he has had some very 'interesting' meals out.
The strangest one was the time he ordered a vegetarian pizza. It was a bog standard cheese and tomato pizza, with 6 whole sprouts rolling around on top.
sounds loverrrly mrs O !!
Sprout pizza !, AHHHHGGGGG.
'The french don't like strong flavors'? (do you mean spicy flavors) I remember my French grannie having some horrible stinky cheeses that smelt like ripe farts..I remember Morrocan food being quite popular in France too.

have yet to meet a healthy looking veggie !
Murray, I have to disagree.

Lots of Indians are vegetarian. They look the same as everyone else.
Some (not all) vegetarians are a bit extreme I must admit -and a bit hypocritical because they will only eat cheese if it does not contain rennet yet conveniently forget that the dairy industry is one of the cruelest of Agricultural Industries where they take away baby calves from their mothers at 12 hours old and kill the male calves at birth.
....Mr O is very healthy. Well, apart from his psoriasis, tinnitus, plantar fascilitis, swollen ankles and reflux
There was some very healthy looking carrots in sainsbury's today -and the caulis looked quite good too.
Retrochic "and a bit hypocritical" I find most people with strong views are hypocrites. I spent two weeks on a yacht with a vegan. He was into animal rights in a big way to the point that he had been arrested for hunt sabotage and his ex girlfriend used to cheer when there was news of a trawler sinking with a loss of life. When we got home he had a bad back and took lots of painkillers. Those painkillers would have been tested on animals. Did he refuse them?

237SJ, I think there are as many different reasons for being a vegetarian as there are vegetarians. People can justify just about anything when it is in their own interest to do so.
jomilf why get so worked up about it? People should be allowed to make choices about what they eat, just as you choose to eat meat, without being castigated . If your friends are the aggressive type of vegetarian that 'demands' their needs be fulfilled, rather than the more normal 'apologetic' ones, then don't take them out for a meal - stay at home and cook them cauliflower cheese.

Retro, it's not me that has hangups about food...I just wish that some veggies could be a little more understanding.
Some Vegetarians are apologetic and make very little fuss if there is hardly anything on the menu they want to eat -some expect people to bend over backwards to accommodate their lifestyle - this happens in all walks of life you can't put everyone in the same boat. Maybe your friends are the latter rather than the former.
a posting on facebook yesterday:-

"Vegetarian".

an olde-worlde word for the village idiot who can't hunt, fish or light fires.
The way I see it:

It is annoying to have to cater for a fad, and that includes diets; but I suspect many vegetarians claim they can not bring themselves to eat animal flesh as they have trained themselves to find it appalling. So if one did not cater for their requirement they would sit there eating nothing whilst others ate. On the other hand if their requirement is catered for the worst that occurs is that the rest are offered a less appetising meal than they'd prefer. Well unless one finds and goes to something like a salad restaurant in which case the normal folk will sit there having nothing. Ergo it is more unreasonable to make a fuss about their quirk.

So, since they are friends, why not endure the inconvenience once in a while. Or better still, meet up on occasions that doesn't include eating.

A salad restaurant...?

Mushroom, not so idiotic when you consider how many plants are toxic. Can't think of any toxic animals though...perhaps mother nature is trying to tell us something.
