Sorry if this has been posted before but have just learned that tonight is Burn's Night. Is this just for the benefit of Scotland or do we do it in England as well?

What are we supposed to do for this special night and have we all got to get poetic for tonight?

Thanks in advance for you kind replies.

Kill a haggis and eat it wi neeps n tatties.
Don't forget the nip of whisky.
Mainly..drink whisky until ye canna 'member who ye are.
If you have'nt shot your Haggis by now,its too late. They are protected till next year. They need peace and quiet for breeding purposes.
Apparently we are meant to have bag pipes, recite Burns poety, eat haggis and drink whisky. Unfortunately, I didn't get home until 7.30 so we had prawn, chickpea and chorizo stew. My "sweaty" (a term I learnt only yesterday) is consequently disowning me with a Burns poem as we speak.
Don't do anything unless you're Scottish.
Ignore it, you can't understand a word they say.
Afraid giveup is right - haggis should have been shot, hung for at least a month and dressed by now. If you haven't done this you've another year to wait. Never mind a wee nip while reciting "Wee, sleekit, cowrin, tim'rous beastie" will suffice for this year.
Anna - you have no idea how right you are. When we meet up with his brother and his best mate in Scotland, I end up nodding and saying "yes" and "no" intermittently because I do not understand an effing word of what they are on about. He slips into broad Glaswegian with his sibling and his mate and I have no idea whatsoever. Next time I'm just going to take a good book with me.
Oh Barmaid, believe me I do know.
One of my most surreal moments occured when visiting a pal there.
The chinese folk in the local takeaway spoke broad Glaswegian.
I had to have a lie down.
You're right Anna, but it works two ways. Last time I was in Newcastle I had real problems understanding a word. I'm Scottish but even I can struggle at times with the Doric (north east Scotland). Now Glasgow's easy peasy, they just lengthen their vowels.
I know the feeling, Barmaid, about the dialect :-)

We've just come back from a Burns Supper. Haggis, neeps, tatties - Cranachan. I am sooooo full up....
But they don't use any consonants..........:o(
I had haggis for the first time today. They were serving it up in our canteen. I'll try anything once and I'm glad I tried it but it wasn't to my liking. Black pudding next :o)
whidgy mean ye cannae unerstaun barmaid ?
I once visited Yorkshire, and they seem to add syllables.... right becomes ry-ut, oo my
ican unnerstaun, widgy, it's just the different turns of phrase which faze me!
Aye, ya think me heed buttons up the back.....?!
It's Burns' Night by the way, named after Rabbie Burns....
Dress up in a kilt and hope for the best.
