I tried making this a couple of years ago and I used Guinness. It was really bitter and not nice at all. So what sort of ale/stout should I use? I have a can of London Pride - would that suffice?

That would be too boring so I` rather just eat a pizza
Try it with a can of John Smiths
You could always try drinking the ale first, then make the pie and you won't notice if it's good or bad. Hic...
When I ate meat (nearly 40 years ago now) I used to use McEwans export in beef casseroles, pies etc.
A good real ale. Most supermarkets have a good range. I use Bishop's Finger, it's a good hoppy real ale. You could try red wine too.
I'd use Shepherd Neame's porter. Asda sell it as their own brand 'Whitechapel Porter' and Sainsbury's sell it as their 'London Porter'.
