How does one deal with a six-year old girl who chose her coat in the shop and after one week, decides she doesn't like it anymore and refuses to wear it?

Personally I think it's a good opportunity for you to demonstrate her personal responsibilities and let her be cold if she doesn't want to wear it. Check first however that she's not being bullied at school because it's not the coat all the "in crowd" have got, as kids can be cruel about the most trivial of things.
If that's the case get her a different coat, as once bullying starts it rarely stops and you don't want her to be the class victim.
If she's just been petulant however, give her the choice, wear it and be warm or don't and be wet and cold.
Sorry, but that is girls for you. Mine is 12 and I have a bag full of clothes to give away some of which my daughter chose but never wore! I guess the answer is make her go without and when she gets cold or wet she will decide it is a better option? It is quite common for girls to do this and then when they decide to wear it they have grown out of it. If you start buying new, because she won't wear what you have just bought she will learn that this happens. Sorry, I sippose I havent helped!
I would agree with nox and hjt40. If you go right out and buy her a new one she'll learn thats what happens. You'll end up with a monster!!! lol x
id tell her if she isnt going to wear it then be it,take her outside when its rainning she will soon change her mind
Put your foot down now, otherwise she will manipulate you for the rest of her life. Shes only 6 stand up for yourself
Agree with the others totally.Say you can't change it and can't afford another one so she will have to go cold if she doesn't wear it.Then next time you have to buy her something tell her to think carefully as her final choice can't be changed.
I think it's a girl thing.
My daughter is 14 and this still happens, even when she is spending her own money, on her own without my influence. she still comes home and 2 hours later decides she doesn't 'like' it anymore!

I always tell her that she chose it, deal with it!!

Obviously your daughter is only 6 but i agree, if you can't possibly change it, she will have learnt a valuable lesson - which i am sure she will forget very soon!!!
Reminds me of way back in the early 70's!

We bought our two daughters the same winter coats from M&S. Top half was light brown with fur hood & the bottom half was brown/tan check pattern (very smart at the time)!

They both wore them quite happily, until the younger one, then aged 5, came home crying, saying that another girl had said her coat looked like colour of 'sh*t'. (Very nice from an 8 year old)!

I told our daughter that this naughty girl was just jealous & to ignore her. She carried on wearing it & nothing more was said.

Have you asked your daughter whether anyone has said something nasty about her new coat? Just a thought.....

I think we have agreed to compromise. She will wear the new coat for 3 days and an old coat (while it fits) for two days.

I will ask her if someone has said something nasty about the new coat though.
I once bought my eldest a lovely coat, from Mexx costing fifty quid, with her approval i.It had a pocket on back for her hat scarf and gloves ( she was a misplacer of things) when it was resting on it' s hook. Some little rotter used to leave gifts in it for her every day, some nice - some not so nice , for two weeks - she spent the rest of the term wearing a charity shop replacement , cost a fiver, with a hood that had tiny buttons so she didn't get garroted during lunchtime play either, the hood ended up in the hands of who ever pulled it. No fun and they soon avoided her. I t might not be a simple issue here. Ask lots of questions !!!!
