Tailoring Trousers?

I am tempted to buy a suit on ebay for a wedding later this year. The jacket is the ideal size but the trousers are 34" where as I am a 32". The seller has offered to alter the trousers for £6 but I am concerned that they will still look and feel too big. As I have never had a pair of trousers altered any advice would be welcomed.

Do you have a local seamstress/tailor in your area? Check with dry cleaners as well as adverts placed in local shops.
The size of leg might still be too big tho, depending upon the style and cut of the trousers.

I wouldn't risk the seller doing it - just buy the suit then get someone local to alter it for you, so you can have a couple of fittings too. Dry cleaners, sewing shops, our fancy dress shop all do alterations.

I'd have thought done correctly it would be fine. But by someone who will be doing it without seeing it fitted on you. Are they quaified anyway ? It may be ok but I think I'd not risk it. Once altered to suit you you won't be in a strong position to return it if it has a problem. I'd have thought if you want a garment altered take it to the tailor or seamstress who will mark what needs to be done properly.

(Or buy a belt and wait for everyone to say how you have lost weight.)

I didn't state it is the waist that is too big not the length. Any ideas how much the alteration would be on the high street?

It really depends how much work is involved, and the style of the trouser - how much has to be taken apart and restitched to the smaller size. Could be twenty quid, could be more.

Taking trousers in is a complicated procedure. You have to practicaly re-make them. If you still want to buy them I would get someone local to you to alter them and th en they can be fitted properly.Don't get the seller to do it before you've tried them on.

As grange says taking trousers in would be very complicated and time consuming. If the seller is only going to charge £6 I can't see it being a decent job.

i agree its not just like hemming... for suit trousers in paticular you have to resew pockets, maybe belt loops and creases etc - to dont just run a line of stiches down each leg.

are you nearer 33" or nearly 31"?
if youre nearer 33", then it is only 2 inches, so they cant be that much too big for you, you may find they fit perfectly.
