I have a large swelling on the OUTSIDE of my knee. It feels very hard and comes and goes after a day or two. I was thinking it could be bursitis but on line I am informed that the swelling only appears on the INSIDE or top of the knee near the patella. Its does not feel like fluid (does not respond to depression) and nor is it overly painful. Don't fancy sitting in A & e for the day. Any suggestions as to what it might be. Surely it would be impossible to have bone displacement without intense pain!

Well if you've had the problem for more than 24 hours and it isn't disabling you then A and E is not the right place to go. Make an appointment with your GP.

Its recurrent Woofgang and to be honest would prefer not bother GP. He will only refer me to A&E anyway. Usually by the time these things are treated they have subsided...lol If it can be treated at home with minimal fuss then all the better...
Then the Internet is wrong.

Housemaids knee, pre patellar bursitis usually appears above or below the knee, but can occur on the outside or inside of the knee.

Sounds like Housemaid ´s Knee

A& E is NOT the place to get it seen to, so your GP is your next port of call.

Thanks squad.......just checking that it would be nothing sinister. No doubt I can rest it then and avoid having to make visit to GP. Your posts have always been informative and useful..thanks
Razzle...no problem.
