Thorn in the foot!

Morning all,

Yesterday while I was walking my dog, I stepped on what I assume was a thorny branch. I never saw what it actually was but there was a pretty big hole in my foot.

Once I got home I got my dad to check that there was nothing in there, which he said there wasn't and I also put some anti septic cream on it. But this morning my foot is really red, swollen and painful and I can't put my weight on it properly.

Does anyone know of anything else I can put on it or will I just have to wait til it goes down? It seems a bit trivial to go to the doc about...

I think you can get stuff at the chemost called 'drawing' paste. You put it on and as it dries it draws out whatever it is. The Ramblers I belonged to swore by it.
If your tetanus jab is out of date I'd get that checked and renewed if necessary as all sorts of bugs could have entered your foot.
Just to be alarmist a customer 'disappeared' and she was DEAD from getting a rose thorn in her arm and got tetanus also called lockjaw.
Good Luck. You've got the perfect excuse for putting your feet up!

Go to A/E this morning. Sounds infected and Tallulah is correct in that you will need a tetanus jab.

Again not trying to be alarmist but my brother got blood poisoning in his arm from a thorn of a rose bush when we were working one time .
I'd agree with sqad617 go to A/E . Better to be safe than sorry

Its gone down alot this morning, it just looks like a big mossie bite now but still hurts to walk on...

God I hate jabs!!

Don't be embarrassed - go to A&E asap for an anti tetanus.
Better to be safe.

Ok, I'll be going up to A&E after work to get it looked at.

So does anyone have any tips for someone who turns into a nervous wreck at the thought of an injection?!!!

Your GP's practice nurse can administer a Tetanus injection and examine the wound,if she(or he) feels it is necessary they will advise you to got to A&E,If you go to hospital without first seeing your GP or practice nurse and the A&E unit is busy you will have to wait a long time to be seen.

Well, I phoned my doctors surgery and explained what had happened. They looked at my records and assured me that I was covered for tetanus until 2010 - big relief!

But they told me to go in to see the nurse, I had the foot bathed in some sort of solution and its now bandaged up nicely.

All this fuss for a little thorn! Thanks very much for all the advice everyone, much appreciated!
