I use half oats/half flour and Demerara sugar adds to the crunch too.
A few nuts included would help also oatmeal.
I've just bought 2 ready made apple crumbles from local farm shop, the topping looks to have crushed digestive biscuits in it as well as the usual stuff.

The proof of the pudding ....... as they say.
You could toast some hom-made breadcrumbs and sprinkle them on top of the usual crumble mixture. Take care they don't scorch, though.
I use porridge oats also. I use dark muscavado sugar too. Don't ask what proportions though...I just wing it!
PS...I also sprinkle ice water over just before putting in the oven...learned from Nigel Slater.
i use coconut
I buy mine from Iceland. I cook dinners and buy the dessert, serve with either Ice-cream or custard.
