bernie....how long is that piece of string.
Quite often, shingles in the elderly leads to a persistent painful condition known as "post herpetic neuralgia" which may be difficult to treat.

If she doesn't have painkillers or the ones that she has seems ineffective, then see her GP.

thx sqad she is off to the doctors tomorrow will keep you informed
bernie...thanks.
Hi Bernie

I suffer from shingles so all I will say is that they are prolonged if

1) you are exposed to extreme of temperatures (cold and hot)
2) you scratch them
3) you dont use cold sore cream. (zovirax sp?)

But this is only from personal experience. I swear by zovirax (or similar own brands) and make sure that I always have some in the house so I can apply immediately.

Good Luck
When I had shingles, many moons ago now when I was but a young thing, I took huge doses of B complex vitamins. Bought them from the chemist and took about three times the daily dose every day for a fortnight.
I have no way of proving this, but I am certain that it shortened the time I suffered with this awful illness.
Made my wee smell awful, but it was worth it.
Can't hurt for a limited time.
I had shingles aged 9 but cannot remember any associated pain.

I do wonder if shingles can recur?
I think they can NoM, my wife has had shingles twice.
