While we burn and bury good kidneys Anne.
It is very sad, there seems not to be enough donors.
I'm forever indebted to the anonymous young lady who gave OH five fairly good years which he wouldn`t have had without a transplant.
Good point anne and we mustn't.t forget lovers also.

Not only is there not enough donors, but due to binge drinking in the young, obesity causing type 2 diabetes in a much younger age group, the demand for organs IOS increasing.
LOL...." lovers?"............I meant livers.
Will it ever be an opt-out rather than opt-in system?
Question Author
sqad. lovers ? i just dont understand why this country does not adopt the ''opt out system'' ?
Question Author
LOL at sqad, i wondered if there was a ''lovers transplant list '' :)
Probably a good idea Evian. Many of our friends hadn`t given donating after death a thought until OH`s kidneys failed when they joined the scheme.
There will be arguments against i expect.
Sqad, I'm not donating my lover to anyone!

But seriously, it is a shame that more people aren't registered donors. I know there has been talk of an opt-out system, which makes a lot of sense. I suspect a lot of people agree to organ donation in principle, but never get round to registering.
It's just as sad for any transplant list.
anne....if there was.....then put me down for a "bigger one".........-;)
We should have the opt out system, why should relativies in their grief have to decide whether to donate or not. It should the individual person to decide and op out.
I was carrying a donor card long before I met OH. He would never register...tempting fate and all that nonsense.
When his kidneys failed I asked him how he would feel if organs were only donated to adults who were carrying a donor card. Unworkable I know but it made him think.
There has been a significant effort to improve the Organ Transplant programme within the UK over the last few years. That effort has resulted in significant improvements on the number of registered donors - but there is obviously room for further improvement.

There is a big discussion going on at the moment on additional initiatives to encourage further organ donation, ranging from paying the funeral costs for those individuals who donate their organs upon death through to the concept of presumed consent ( or opt-out), and these systems are being trialled in various parts of the country.

Indeed, Wales are at the stage of bringing forward a legislative bill to introduce a system of presumed consent into Law within Wales in 2015.Should that prove successful, I am sure that such a system would be extended throughout the UK.

It is almost certainly a given that, offered a transplant to replace a failed or failing organ, most people would not hesitate to accept - unyet only around 30% of those thought eligible are signed up as organ donors.More people need to do the right thing and register....

There can be a bit of a wave effect with it. Without trying to blow my own trumpet, I started giving blood a few years ago and at the same time registered to donate anything I could upon my death. I made a bit of a song and dance about it which resulted in several family members and friends doing the same. Most of them hadn't previously just because they'd never got round to it.

I think more heavy handed campaigns would be a good start.

re our own families , we could ask their views on transplant donation if/when they die. !
