Ear wax

I've had problems with the build up of wax and consequent hearing impairment for many years now.
When I notice things are getting worse again I drop some almond oil in for a week or so then make an appointment with my health centre to have the offending residue washed out with water.
To try and cut down the time that I'm completely deaf in the treated ear I'm asking if anyone knows of a safe alternative to the almond oil which might act quicker in softening the wax.
Look forward to any info, thanks.

Update: Although still a bit dull in the right lug I don't have the complete deafness I've experienced in the past when I've used almond oil. Olive, as suggested, seems to be the way to go. :)
i have troublesome ear wax too douglas and warm olive oil has definetely softened it. the most dramatic affect for ear clearance ever though, came after i visited an air show, and was pretty close to a very loud harrier jump jet!! the subsequent shaking of the ground in the near vicinity, popped my deaf ear!

Finally, success. The second lug irrigated this AM and I can hear clearly again.
It's the simple things. :)
Well done douglas............thanks for the update.
So cancel the howkers for the late crop in Sept then, Douglas? ;)
