My husband has a vvery large ulcer on his ankle (awaiting a bed at Kings for a procedure to insert stents in his groin to help circulation). This is being dressed each day by district nurses, two of whom said he needed antibiotics. The chemist has just delivered two, Metronidazole and Flucloxacillin. The pharmacy and doctor's surgery are now closed until next Monday. Should he take both or is this a mistake?

can you call NHS direct for advice?
sorry i'm not sqad, but what doses are they and what does the label say?

They are prescribed together in instances such as acute diabetic foot infections. If in doubt telephone a pharmacist to double check.
There will be other pharmacists open at the moment - Tesco here has a late night pharmacy and your own chemist will have a note on the door saying which is the nearest one open over the weekend. Find out, and give them a ring - they are probably open until 8pm and will certainly be there tomorrow.
I think that the GP has covered themselves by prescribing two types of antibiotics to help to kill off two different types of bacteria.
Failing advice from sqad, it looks as if these two antibiotics have been prescribe to to cover the 2 most likely culprits C. diff. and Staph. aureas, so use them both as no one antibiotic will do the lot.
where i work the prescribers may give two types if we are waiting for a swab or sample to come back and the infection can't wait! x

Just as a warning I was given Metronidazole for a tooth abscess and was told by the dentist and again in Boots not to touch a drop of alcohol or I'd be really sick.
