Most do, yes. They hide in damp places such as under leafmulch and in soil. In the ponds they 'sink' to the bottom and become torpid, barely ticking over.
Yes, they usually go to bottom of ponds and cover themselves in the "mud".(read it when I was small, about a century ago!!!)
