In the meat trade...
Lamb - killed in the year it was born, but if born after 31st September it can be killed at any time in the following year and still be called lamb. It could be 2 months or up to 15 months old.
Hogget - killed in the first six months of the year after it was born, but if born after 31st September it can be killed during the first six months of the second year after being born and still be called hogget. It could be 4 months or up to 21 months old.
Sheep (i.e. Mutton) - 2 or more years old.

Oh dear, im a veggie - have never liked the taste of sheep or anymeat since i was a youngster many years ago. Since then it has become a sort of issue - apoligies to all meat eaters but i cant help it, thats the way i am!! Hearing of wen they are killed for meat just makes me feel a touch not too good.
Please don't take offence anyone.
I appreciate that many enjoy meat and many dont. Veggie diet is lovely - I have survived all these years - Cud never eat even the veggie so called tasty meat - the taste....... yuk!!!!
Please don't have a go, i know the animals are bred for eating - but i will stick to my veggies etc.
Each to their own. Best wishes to everyone. :o)
