Used a mens room in a restaurant today washed by hands before leaving. I followed a guy out who had not bothered to wash his hands and had to touch the 'contaminated' outer door handle. Should such establishments provide sanitizer gel as they do in hospitals?

won't make any difference, if they don't want to or can't be bothered, doesn't matter what is there.
No. It's up to us if we wash our hand or not.

The gel is more use against bacteria than viruses. Much more useful if the door-handle is made of copper - copper can kill pathogens.
That's why you should never eat the piddle mints that they have in little dishes in some restaurants. Guys like that have shoved their hands in the bowl before you. Hence ... "piddle mints"

Sorry, I didn't express myself properly. I'm proposing that hand sanitizer be available outside the toilet so that we fastidious people may neutralise the effects of the dirty scumbags.
I always grab a sheet of toilet paper or paper towel to protect my hand from contamination in those cases.

Indeed but where do you stop McMouse, on your theory it would need to be in every single public place, which is frankly ridiculous.
A few years ago I saw a program were at the end of the night the little bowls of peanuts etc on a pub bar were tested for traces of urine etc. After seeing the results I've never touched anything like that.
Okay I know it's not a nice idea, people using the loo and not washing their hands, sneezing and coughing on doorknobs etc but seriously that is w3hat you have an immune system for to fight off nasties you come into contact with day to day. I really don't use hand sanitizer unless I'm going to a hospital and niether does anyone else in my family and we never get bugs and nasties because our immune systems are good. you can overdo such things you know. Simple hygeine is usually enough.
Whatever you do, don't touch any money.
I always judge a Pub on how clean their Toilets are.
I agree, simple hygiene is enough. I always think as long as I wash my hands properly Im not gonna pass anything on or catch anything off others. You just have to hope for the best or wear gloves all day ( and wash them daily )
McM.......I have a certain amount of sympathy for your view....however, if that should be the case, then how would we develop antibodies to the offending pathogens? Wouldn't we be a sitting duck for a devastating infection.

In the VD clinic as it used to be called, there was always a ..."suspicion" that the guys who shagged prostitutes on a regular basis developed an immunity, whereas the poor old office clerk out for a night with the boys was egged on to "have a go" never touched a pro. before.....got a dose on his first venture.

No scientific evidence for the above....
That's a bit of a leap from touching toilet handles, Sq
^^^ A jump too far imo! ^^^
The lesson is - wear gloves at every possible opportunity.
If they serve snacks in a brothel, do you ask them to wash their hands before they make you a sandwich?
A different angle - there is scientific proof that prostitutes have far less than half the rate of sexually transmissible infections compared to female college students. They may be tarts, but they usually know what they are doing. If a man goes in for unprotected sex, he deserves what he gets.
