Whatsapp Screen Goes Blank...

Hello, wonder if anyone can help please?
I've just installed whatsapp on my android phone, when someone sends me a message I tap on the message to open it (text or photo), the screen goes black / blank and I get the message 'whatsapp is not responding - wait / report / close' its the latest version of the app.
Any help would be appreciated - have tried the delete and reinstall method, but with no success.
