run a 12volt, wire around my three small garden plots outside my bungalow.
It wouldn't be permanent, as the cats would soon learn not to go on there.

I have just had them covered with white stones, and already the local cat/cats are using them as a toilet.

There is no children living by, and I live in a small cul-de-sac.

Pity the impassioned 'outraged' of AB have missed my point about the fish line -it works in my garden to keep the cats off my seedlings and unlike powders or liquids will not get onto the cats paws and get into their mouths and cause them pain. to be honest I doubt electric fencing would work and would have more concern about children or the postman getting a shock.

As for bells - our house cat, who insists on going out, is belled and can still manage to catch baby rabbits, mice and birds -its horrible but nature is horrible and I think the cruelest thing you can do is keep an animal 24/7 indoors -if you don't like them doing what comes naturally don't keep a cat -simple!
Foxes don't bury their excrement like cats, it's left on the surface and easier to remove. I use disposable gloves these days but the risk of disease is still there.

Retrochic,
No chance of that, the postmen & children don't crap in my garden plot!!!!

trt -you said the plots were outside your bungalow and I presumed you meant at the front ,where maybe children and definitely postmen could come into contact with it. It was you that mentioned 'and no children living by' -I take it that was not to infer children may crap on your garden ? ;-)
This cat organisation link taken from the Cats Protection site describes electric fencing as barbaric.
http://www.cats.org.uk/cat-care/cat-care-faqs
Please don't use it trt.

Well I've searched that site and can't find a reference at all to electric fencing. There are lots more 'barbaric' things you can do to animals than give them a quick zap on the snout -its not like you are electrocuting them you know. They are all a bit 'wobbly' if you ask me at the CPL -made up mainly of women of a 'certain age' who seem to prefer the company of cats to people and make quite damn sure you know what sacrifices they have made for their 'saved' animals.

Please don't Divebuddy -I enjoy a good fight.
people are talking about 6v which I think is homeopathic
I agree you can 'up' it with an induction coil

also *** are furry and so they would be insulated

and trt you cruel cruel child
did they call nick name you twt in the school yard ?
*** = p+u+ss+i+e+s

oh dear the mods are feeling moderate nowadays
If the CPL want something Barbaric -here we go -all happened to our farm cats (all survived) Neighbour throws diesel over half grown kittens because they were in his yard not a private house garden, an agricultural yard and this happened twice with two different cats . They needed washing three times in Fairy Liquid (vets advice) then blow drying. House cat poisoned with something that caused her to puff up like a cushion and she had to go into an oxygen tent for 24 hours -vet thought it was probably paracetamol -strange but true -I truly wish if anyone wants to scare off my cats they either spray them with water or use 6v electric fencing.
So basically, you want to cull the cats in the cul-de-sac?
From ladybirder's link.
There are many ways to deter a cat from entering your garden, some are humane, others barbaric (like electric shock fences). Cats Protection recommends a number of humane deterrents, which are far more effective than many of the products on the market.
yes tonyav i can imagine - a post menopausal woman (single) armed with a feather duster half-heartily chasing the kitty down the garden path while wondering if its a stray and can she 'save it'
cats bury their excrement? In what parallel universe?
cats bury their excrement in a wormhole
and the olther side is my garden
