An interesting aspect of this is that there appears to be a substantial quantity of the relatives of the passengers, that still hold out hope of their loved ones coming back.

Coming back from where exactly ?

People clutch at straws. They may hope that the plane was hijacked by terrorists and the passengers are held somewhere as hostages to be swapped for imprisoned terrorists.

Sandy...my heart goes out to these people. But its been a year now, and no ransom demands have been forthcoming. Just where could these 239 people be being kept prisoners....in a clearing in a jungle somewhere ?

They need to get over this and move on.
I expect they have heard all the conspiracy stories like the rest of us - if you were desperate about a loss loved one you'd always hold out hope that they were living in a commune in some jungle or outer Mongolia or wherever.

Prudie...I just think that if these people accepted what has happened, they would be able to get on with their lives. Anyway, common sense should tell them that their relatives are dead.

But, as I said, I do have sympathy with their plight.
Yes me too. The flaperon thing arrived in France Sat night, surely by now they've checked serial numbers and know one way or the other. (I heard an expert say beforehand that each aircraft part can be identified to an actual plane).
PS I'd like to be an investigator that gets to go to La Reunion, I'd looked at it on google earth before, nice island getaway :-)
It seems the beach was patrolled by the most boneheaded man in the world.

He says he has been collecting suitcases washed up since May, and has been burning them on the beach. He didn't think to mention the airplane seat that he saw, or this bit of wing that washed up months ago.
Maybe he was searching the luggage for valuables before he burnt it? That would give a reason not to report it.
Soon after the plane went missing, I recall locals in the Seychelles (or somewhere similar, in that part of the world) reporting seeing an aircraft fitting the description of MH 370 flying low off the coast.

Debris washing up on Réunion would support this sighting – I simply don’t believe that the few parts of a plane that would have survived a crash in the vast Indian Ocean (and floated), would all end up at the same location, 6,000 miles away.

The Seychelles is over 1,000 miles from Réunion, so it maybe that the plane crashed not too far away from the island of Réunion.
Boneheaded is being very polite, Gromit.

Gromit...interesting comments about the suitcases...do you have a link ?

Yet Mr Ferrier had no idea of the significance of the object. Flotsam and jetsam washed up are part of his everyday life on the inhospitable beach, where nobody dares to enter the fierce waves and shark-infested waters.
“I found a couple of suitcases too, around the same time, full of things,” he said, almost in passing.
What did you do with them?
“I burnt them,” he said, pointing to the pile of ashes lying on the boulders. “That’s my job. I collect rubbish, and burn it.
“I could have found many things that belonged to the plane, and burnt them, without realising.” //

Thanks Gromit.
// I do not wish to fall foul of a certain ABer who is on the rampage today with a blue pencil. :-( //

I have not notice any posts deleted today. I certainly haven't deleted anything. The best way to avoided deletions is to avoid personal attacks.
Wrong thread.

Had to think for a minute there Dougie !...LOL !
Mikey,
I very rarely moderate anything. Comments such as Retrocop's that you are not hardworking, rather than delete them, I prefer to highlight them.
Question Author
Thanks Gromit.....I am a supporter of R-cop, as I was impressed with his mea culpa when he came back. That doesn't mean that I always agree with him though !
