yes today is a bank holiday in England.
I think it is but I heard on the radio this morning that some bank branches will open. So, not much of a holiday for their staff.

thanks all -
I don't get bank holidays. They usually fall on my normal day off except Good Friday. P's me off no end
I think Sandy that the concept of the bank holiday is being eroded, Originally banks closed so the business community had to close for the day. High street branches may well open but "banking" is still closed.
Work in a betting shop so don't get any Bank Holidays. The only day we close is Xmas day which I think will change next few years
It is an official Public Holiday, whether Banks are open or not. When I worked for BT, we had double time for working on a Sunday, but two and half times normal pay, for giving up our BH's.
If anyone has to work a BH, they should be paid the correct amount of money. If that has changed, it has changed for the worse.
They fall on my normal day off also...but I'm still given a day off in lieu for roughly half of them as I work part time.
Don't get any extra pay for Bank Holidays. We even have to use a day annual leave for Xmas day
cazza...you have my sympathies then. Employment law has gone backwards it would seem.

When I was a boy in the late 50's, my Dad came home one day and announced that he was only going to work a half day on Saturdays from that day on. This was a major improvement in his working conditions, as it meant that he could take me to see Spurs play in the afternoon, something he hadn't been able to do before.

We should be extremely wary of losing our employment rights. They were hard fought for.
In Scotland, kids were off school last Friday for Victoria Day and off today for the bank holiday. Banks ARE closed, but business as usual for everything/everybody else.
I don't get extra pay for bank holidays, we are only shut for 4 over the year.
Angus school kids had the day off, Aberdeenshire didn't, I live just on the border of them, 2 grandkids had to go to school, their cousin didn't.
