I was very pleasantly surprised to hear the original version of this song sung by Betty Hutton in 1951. It was played on the Desmond Carrington Radio 2 programme last week.

Am I the only one that didn't know that Bjork's version wasn't the first?

No your not, I didn't know that Bjorks version was a cover.

Betty's version is well worth a listen. I think you'll agree that Bjork's is not so much a cover as a copy cat :)

I see what you mean, hc4361.

I feel kind of cheated. I thought Bjork was something new and different at the time, a sort of Boy George. Now I know she's just a karaoke singer :(
Oh well, don't think it was just you that was fooled.
I thought Bjork did the original as well.

:) Must have been amazing to hear that for the first time in the early 50s.
Thanks for the chat, tony

ummmm, too. :)
Yes it would I should think, hc4361.
How about this one then.

I bet you thought Natalie Imbruglia was the first to record this one.

I knew that it was a 1950s song but I couldn't have named the singer.

Desmond Carrington and Huey Morgan both have a wonderful attitude to music. They forget about labels such as 'pop', 'rock', '1960s', '1930s', 'ballad', 'folk', 'jazz', etc and simply play good music, irrespective of its period or style.

Desmond Carrington's 'Music Goes Round' is my very favourite radio programme. Never miss it.

Hopkirk, 'Torn' didn't have such an impact on me and I never really thought about it. The only thing about that song I really enjoyed was the mime with David Armand. :D
I didn't know Bjork was not the original - but I don't like her, so I am not really bothered either way.
I knew it wasn't the original. I wouldn't have known who sang it originally though.
there are also those who will tell you what a "thin" cover the Zutons did of this "original"......

Question Author
I knew about that one :)
Blimey that's a surprise, I didn't know the song was so old !
a few years ago, Dave McCabe was asked during a radio interview whether the band would be "doing their Amy Winehouse cover". he sighed and replied "yes, we probably will".
