Came across one in a box of odds and ends. It's dated 1922. I'd always thought 3p coins were twelve sided. Could this one be from a Maundy money set?

If you mean 3d Sandy - the later ones were 12 sided brass coloured but before that they were round and silver coloured like the old 'tanner' (6d)
No reason why it should be. They were in circulation when I was a boy.

That'll be it, Cap't. When I first saw it I thought it was a sixpence but this is smaller.

danny and bhg, your posts weren't there when I typed my first answer.r
Silver, round 3ds were the norm until they were replaced by the bronze 12-sided ones in 1937.
I loved the 12 sided thrupenny bit
I have a 12 sided thrupenny bit and a silver sixpence on a key ring. I know it's an offence to deface a coin of the realm but don't think anyone will come knocking at my door after all these years!
They used to put them in Christmas puddings as I recall. :)
silver threepenny bits go into the christmas pud !
Blimey that's expensive! I used to charge £1 for three thruppenny bits and £1 for one silver coin on the markets. (That silver one has been cleaned - something you should never do - let the buyer decide what condition it stays in).
Yes I thought it was wrong to polish coins.
maundy ones look different, I have got a set somewhere.
I have an old brass threepenny bit. I think the silver one was discontinued in the 1930's, maybe there is a special marking for Maunday Money.
askyourgran, they look completely different. Mine is a 1950's set, my uncle used to work at the Mint and each year so many sets were made available to employees to purchase. They took it in turns to be allowed to purchase. They aren't the same as the bags the Queen gives, they are four coins in a little red fitted case. They aren't for sale. :)
