Cooking them for the first time tonight.
Who has tried this and what are your opinions. Low fat content and slightly unusual meat, thought why not?!

I have tried them but I can't remember what they tasted like. I do know I liked them though.

Suppose to sweet and I have been told cook them as you would do Beef steak?
Not tried them. Local market had a stall advertising ostrich burgers (as if I'd know), but when I asked they didn't have any that day :-(

I'm sure they will be great, let us know how you got on.
No but I've had kangaroo which I thought had a liverish taste and texture. Are lidl doing ostrich now, lol.
Going by the thread that bednobs posted it looks like I had ostrich in Birmingham. :-)
And no one saved me a drumstick (nor an egg).

I am dieting at the moment which becomes repetitive, so went for these to change it up a bit, very lean and low in fat.
If the taste is agreeable may become a weekly thing.
We picked them up from the butcher, but Aldi do them too we noticed
I have a kangaroo skin hat!
tried ostrich steak once, never again, a very odd (to me) taste
I've eaten it in South Africa. I thought it was like a beef fillet steak with less fat. I enjoyed it.
First had ostrich in Switzerland several years ago....and several times since. Delicious!
Had ostrich several times in South Africa. For me it's a no no.
Oh do please let us know how you cooked them and what you thought of them. I have 2 in the freezer that my son donated and have been too chicken to cook them.
Lidl have ostrich steaks in their freezer section here.
Venison is low fat, lower than beef, and you can use venison steaks in exactly the same way you'd use a beef sirloin. Great flavour and texture, too.

I'll try anything once.

So we had the Ostrich.
I can see why there is mixed opinion as it is different in texture and taste to a beef steak. Very lean and slightly sweet.
I cooked ours for 3-4 mins on both sides and this gave a medium/medium well result (reasonably pink) which was perfect for me.
Had with sweet potato, broccoli and green beans. Could think of more imaginative sides but we are dieting at the moment.
All in all I liked it but will never replace a good fillet steak in our house. Would have again though, maybe once every couple of months.
In terms of nutrition, high protein and iron content, low fat.
thanks for the update. I shall try doing them that way when retrieved from the freezer.

You can cook for as little as 2 mins each side, if you eat your steak rare/medium rare for example. I thought as it was a new meat id slightly over do. 3-4 mins each side still gave a fairly pink steak. I would imagine 5-6 mins each side would give you a well done steak, it cooks relatively quick
