This tech ignoramus is looking for advise again please.
Having received 5 cold calls for consumer info in the space of a few hours I have decided to change my landline for either a phone which allows " number blocking" or " caller id ". I am registered with the telephone preference service.
Is there such a wall mounted phone that does NOT require an electrical socket as well as a phone socket. I would need to put in lengthy extensions of one or the other to accommodate this requirement.

Our main phone has a small screen that shows the number, and you can get plug in caller id devices, battery operated
I use TalkTalk and they provide call barring free of charge. Perhaps the company you pay line rental to offers the service as opposed to changing your handset.
Number blocking won't help you as you won't know their number. Caller I'd will be useless too as it will say number withheld and sometimes this will be people you may want to speak to. Why not just keep a whistle near your phone?
Grasscarp - blocking is useful if used properly. When the phone rings with unknown caller id don't answer then block that number so that it can't call again. Needs caller id, obviously.

Hi bhg 481. I think you are saying that you can block a number that has been withheld? Grasscarp, you are right that you will not know their number although one of these consumer group pests did leave a number a couple of times, but now they do not. Doctors and hospitals and such do not leave numbers.
I also feel miffed that I am even considering changing my phone because of these xxxxxx nuisances - so I wont.
I like the sound of a whistle. My Mother told me that patience ( and tolerance ) was a virtue!!!!
Thank you all for your thoughts, it has helped me put it into perspective.
Sorry jayemcee - not all nuisance calls come from withheld numbers. My system only works when the calling number is available. If the number is withheld you are stuck.
