We are still very close to our animal ancestors when it comes to this. "Fight or Flight" mechanism is what it is I think, and it is the bodies response to extreme stress. It is controlled by an area of the brain called the Hypothalamus, and triggers the release of a variety of chemicals, such as adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol. This in turn prepares the body, by increasing the respiration rate, dilating the pupils of the eyes, pain perception is diminished, and blood is shunted away from the digestive system toward the muscles and limbs.

You are scared because of preconceptions or previous experience.

We are only actually born afraid of 2 things (naturally) - a fear of falling and a fear of loud noises (ie. a bang would scare us).

Some people overcome their fear of falling and I suppose to some degree we all adapt to loud noises (unless we are caught unawares)
