I remember my parents boiling eggs for our tea in the kettle ! Bread toasted on a fork thrust into the rayburn, and as we were farmers we drank milk straight from the cow. Wonderful times. Do you remember things like this that are food related we might not be so happy with now ?

It was an Autumn tradition in my neck of the woods, paddywak.
I used to visit an elderly couple (they were probably younger than I am now). She made the loveliest griddle scones over an open turf fire hanging from a crook and smothered in the butter she churned

Getting home from school and having bread and real dripping.
Not only did I milk the cow...and yes we drank the milk with no problems... but I was in charge of going out into the fields to gather mushrooms....for some reason I could always sense where the fresh mushrooms had popped up.
I think my family was very brave....☻

I know, Psyb.....I won't do it now.....but we survived and they were so good.....fried in the butter we made....

I knew it, an hippy chick.
I can remember having oxo pobs when mum was skint. That was a bowl of oxo and hot water with pieces of dry bread floating in it.
We often had pobs but that was watered down milk with bread
Funny - I remember the same events as you. We had a coal fired Rayburn and we used to roast chestnuts etc on the fire and we used to use the bottom left plate warmer for saving dying lambs and other assorted animals. My mother says that Christmas dinner has never been the same since it was cooked in the Rayburn. She is probably right.
