I have just treated myself to an early xmas present of a fitbit and the aria scales, now my bodyfat was 40.5% this morning according to the scales, I'm not what you would call obesely overweight I'm 5ft 7 and weigh 10st 11lb where does the readings come from, do they take a womans boobs into consideration I have largish boobs and a bit of a belly but my arms and legs have hardly any fat on them. That body fat percentage seems a bit harsh to me. By the way I walk on average 4/5 miles a day at a fairly fast pace.

a 5'7 you seem like a perfectly healthy weight to me. I have no idea how these scales can detect fat from muscle -do you key in your waist hip bust measurements? A very fit lean athlete of your height could weigh 12 stone and have 17% body fat and a couch potato weighing 10 stone could have 50% body fat but how a scale can work this out beats me.
I don't know either but suspect a web search will bring up an explanation.

I figure it probably sends an electrical signal up one leg and monitors wheat arrive down the other leg and makes decisions based of the received signal. I doubt whether one has large breasts or stomach makes much difference.

Fat can be internal around your organs as much as on the surface altering your silhouette.
I agree with Retrochic........beats me how they sort it out.

5Ft 7inches.....10stone 11lbs....big boobs, bit of a belly. Walk 4/5 miles a day.
You don't say how old your are.

I would ignore the "charts."
if its BMI you are referring to, look here... http://www.bapen.org.uk/screening-for-malnutrition/must-calculator
How exactly is my body fat and water measured?
Salter scales use a measurement method known as Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). A minute current is sent through your body, via your feet and legs. This current flows easily through the lean muscular tissue, which has a high fluid content, but not easily through fat. Therefore, by measuring your body’s impedance (i.e. its resistance to the current), the quantity of muscle can be determined. From this, the quantity of fat and water can then be estimated.

Get on the scales again and I bet you get a way different reading.

Judge your body fat by looking in the mirror.
Internal body fat is much more dangerous to your health
